Mozilla Thunderbird Setup Guide

Windows Mozilla Thunderbird Setup Guide

Please download the latest version of Mozilla Thunderbird. There is a link under Recommended Downloads.

In the following example, we will setup an IMAP email account using a Gmail email address.

You will require:

  • A Gmail account
  • Your password

You will set:

  • imap.gmail.com as the incoming mail server and port 993
  • smtp.gmail.com as the outgoing mail server and port 465
  • SSL/TLS as the SSL (Secure Socket Layer)

Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird

  • Open Mozilla Thunderbird Email client
  • Click Tools then select Account Settings
  • In the bottom left of the Account Settings window select Account Actions
  • Then select Add Mail Account
  • Now enter your
    • Name
    • Email address
    • Password
  • Select Continue
  • Thunderbird will automatically try to define the account settings based on the domain of your email address. Press the Stop button and select Manual Config.
  • Incoming should be set to IMAP
  • Set the Incoming Server Hostname to imap.gmail.com
  • Set the port to 993 and ensure SSL/TLS is selected
  • Set the Outgoing Server Hostname to smtp.gmail.com
  • Set the port to 465 and ensure SSL/TLS is selected
  • Set Normal Password under Authentication for both the incoming and outgoing servers.
  • Your username should just be the first part of the email address without the @gmail.com
  • Now click Done and then OK
  • To confirm that your Gmail account is configured correctly, send yourself a test email from your new gmail address.If received, you have successfully setup your Gmail IMAP account in Thunderbird.
